Mathilde Nelly de Vries (nicknamed Tilly) studied economic history at the Municipal University of Amsterdam. She was a member of the Anti-Fascist Students Committee.
Four students with communist sympathies launched the illegal publication 'De Vrije Katheder; Bulletin ter verdediging van de universiteiten'. Tilly de Vries was one of the founders and she joined the editorial staff. She also maintained contacts with other university towns.
She was betrayed, picked up in March 1941 and deported to Auschwitz as a Jew.
