Recollections of a childhood friend: ‘We collected stamps and did basic scientific experiments that we learned about from Donald's elder brother Gerald. After the persecution of the Jews began, Donald kept coming over to our house. He kept his star hidden, because there were quite a few collaborators in our street. He sometimes came by scooter, because Jews were no longer allowed to have bicycles by then. He celebrated St Nicholas’ Eve with us in 1942 and gave me a jigsaw map of the Netherlands that he had made himself, painted orange with portraits of the queen and the prince. Also a card with Donald's best wishes for the year 1943 I preserved'.
