About Sophia Benjamins-Arend

Sophia Arend married on 18 August 1912 to Abraham Benjamins. She worked at Heinemann & Ostwald, the haute couture warehouse of Rotterdam, until she married. On 4 September 1942 (the birthday of her husband) Sophia was arrested, together with one of her two children by the police of Rotterdam. They were deported to Westerbork. Her two children miraculously survived the concentration camps.

Abraham Benjamins and Sophia Arend had two children, who survived the war. Abraham Benjamins was a commercial painter, pleasant company and an artist. He was liberal Jewish. He liked to organise entertainment. In 1942 he was first in labour camp Putten, before he was sent to Westerbork with his wife. Sophia Arend was chef-saleslady in a fashion store.
