Biography

About Rolf Josef Calmanowitz

Rolf Josef Calmanowitz belonged to a group of young German Zionists who came to Assen to work in Zeijerveld in Drente with farmers to prepare for farm life in Palestine. He fled to Deventer, where the so-called Deventer association office was located. The Westerweel group helped him find a place to hide in Gorssel.

On 30 July 1942 the mayor of Assen published a request for information about his whereabouts in the Algemeen Politieblad. Rolf Josef Calmanowitz was caught and deported via Westerbork.
