Charles van Lier was a son of Samuel van Lier and Franciska Adelaar.
After a divorce he married for the second time in 1924. The couple had three children. The family lived in Blaricum. He was an art dealer.
Charles van Lier helped out artists in hiding, for instance by taking care of false identity papers. He worked together with Arondeus. After the latter's arrest, he was picked up on 7 April 1943 in Blaricum. After passing through various camps, he was killed at the age of 47 in camp Müllenberg, near Hannover.

After his arrest on 17 April 1943, Charles (Carel) van Lier was held at the prison on Amstelveenseweg in Amsterdam. He was sent first to Camp Amersfoort and then to Westerbork. On 23 March 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz and sent to work in the subcamp Laurahütte. He was subsequently transferred to Mauthausen and then to Neuengamme, after which he was sent to Aussenkommando Mühlenberg near Hannover. There he was murdered.
