On 22 and 23 Febuary 1941, raids took place in Amsterdam,  in which 390 Jewish men were arrested and deported. Only two of them survived. A recent investigation has shown that more than 100 men were gassed in Hartheim Castle, while Mauthausen was established as the official place of death.

Alexander en zijn broer Isaac de Leeuw waren de twee middelste zoons in het gezin van Hijman de Leeuw en Betje Blik. Ze hadden nog een oudere en een jongere broer, Jacob en Samuel. De vier jongens zijn allen geboren en getogen in de oude Jodenbuurt. De twee broers de Leeuw trouwden  met twee zussen Walvisch Marietje en Sientje.
