Biography

About Salomon Bierman, his wife Esther Mok and their children Meijer and Sonja.

Salomon Bierman was the 3rd child of Levie Bierman and Sara Italiaander. He was born on 26 March 1899 in Amsterdam and he became a barber by profession. On 1 July 1925 he married in Amsterdam the 25-year old Esther Mok, who was born on 5 September 1899 as a daughter of Samuel Mok and Saartje Polak. The couple had two children: in June 1926 their son Meijer was born and in April 1930 their daughter Sonja.

When Salomon and Esther were married, they lived in the Nieuwe Kerkstraat 1c, moved to house nr. 8 in December 1928 and per 30 December 1929 to house nr. 1B ground floor. There was also established the barbershop of Salomon Bierman. However, the anti-Jewish measures of the Germans resulted in the fact that since the summer of 1942, his non-Jewish customers were no longer allowed in his shop to cut and shave.

As a Jewish barber he belonged to the group of Jewish trades-people, who could apply for a special exemption from deportation, the so-called “Jewish Business Sperre”. His shop was designated as a “Jewish business” were only Jews were allowed to shop, cut and shave. On 25 July 1942 Salomon Bierman obtained his special exemption, no. 97917 LOK ZA 272 which resulted that also his wife and children were exempted from deportation until further notice.

However, during the 2nd half of May 1943, the Germans decided to cancel all exemptions. On 26 May 1943 they held a large round-up, where ±3000 Jews from the centre of Amsterdam were arrested and carried off to Westerbork, among them also Salomon Bierman with his family. Salomon, Esther and Meijer ended up in barrack 56 but Sonja in barrack 60. On 1 June 1943 the entire Salomon Bierman family was put on transport to Sobibor and upon arrival there immediately murderded in the gas chambers there.
