Biography

The fate of Jansje Vrieslander, her husband Mozes Wolf and their sons Nico Nathan and Philip with his wife Estella Hes.

Jansje Vrieslander, born 27 January 1887 in Den Helder, was the youngest daughter of Retje Leon Beek and Philip Lazarus Vrieslander. She married 24 August 1914 in Oss the cattle trader Mozes Wolf, who was born 9 March 1888 in Vegehel as son of Nathan Wolf and Rosa Hes. The couple lived at Ridderstraat 27 in Oss and had four children, namely Nico Nathan in 1915, Philip in 1916, Rozette in 1917 and Roza in 1919.

Rozette was married to Salomon Frankenhuis, who was killed in Auschwitz in April 1943. They had a daughter who was born in 1941 but mother and daughter have survived the Shoah. Her sister Roza was married in 1942 to Marcus de Leeuw and both survived the Holocaust.

Nico Nathan Wolf and his brother Philip were put on transport on 31 August 1942 from Westerbork to Auschwitz. The train however stopped at Kozel, which is located about 80 km west from Auschwitz. There 200 boys and men between 15 and 50 years were forced to leave the train, to be deployed as forced labourers in one of the satellite camps of Auschwitz. Most likely Nico and Philip belonged to that group of 200 men who had to leave the train.

Those, who remained in the train were transported onwards to Auschwitz to be murdered there, including Philip’s wife Estella Hes, who was registered in Westerbork on 27 August 1942 and most likely has been put on transport on 31 August to Auschwitz too. On arrival there on 3 September 1942 Estella Wolf-Hes has been immediately murdered.

Eventually, Nico lost his life on 31 March 1944 somewhere in Mid-Europe. His brother Philip, who was married to Estella Hes on 31 July 1942, lost his life too during the Holocaust: on 10 February 1945, presumably somewhere in Mid Europe due to exhaustion, diseases or hardships.

Jansje Vrielander and her husband Mozes Wolf were both taken from their domicile in Oss to concentration camp Vught on 9 April 1943. From there, they were tranported to Westerbork on 24 May and the next day, on 25 May 1943 deported to Sobibor. On arrival there on 28 May 1943, Jansje Vrieslander and her husband Mozes Wolf were immediately murdered.
