Biography

The fate of Izak Vos and his family.

Izak Vos was a son of Joseph Vos and Mietje Bierman. He was married, probably around 1925 to Henriette Cutzien from Oldenzaal, usually known as Krukziener, a daughter of Meijer Cutzien and Jane de Groot. Izak and Henriette had two children, namely Joseph on 2 April 1927 and Jeanne on 27 July 1932. However, the complete family, who lived at Bentheimerstraat 53a in Coevorden (Drenthe), was killed in the Shoah.

Izak Vos, his wife Henriette and their children Joseph and Jeanne were deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz on 16 October 1942 where on arrival there on 19 October 1942, Henriette and her daughter Jeanne were immediately killed.

The transport of 16 October 1942 however, with in total 1710 deportees, made a stop at Kozel, located about 80 km. west from Auschwitz, where 570 boys and men between 15 and 50 year were forced to leave the train. They were then employed as forced labourers in the surrounding satellite camps of Auschwitz. Those who remained in the train were transported onwards to Auschwitz to be killed there.

Joseph Vos was 15 years old in April and he belonged as one of the 570 men, who were employed as forced labourers by the Germans. It is not known on which date and where Joseph exactly lost his life. Therefore, after the war, by order of the Ministery of Justice a certificate of death was drawn up in the municipality of Coevorden for Joseph Vos, in which place and date of his death was established as in Mid Euripe on 30 April 1944.

Izak Vos too belonged to the group of 570 men who were employed as forced labourers in one of the surrounding labor camps in the region and it has been appeared later, that Izak Vos ended up in the "Reichsautobahnlager Annaberg". After the war, it was known that Izak Vos had not survived the Holocaust, but it was not known where and when and under what circumstances. Therefore, also for Izak Vos, on order of the Ministery of Justice, a certificate of death has been drawn up after the war in the municipality of Coevorden, in which his place and date of death was established as in Mid Europe on 31 March 1944.

However, in 2015, research was carried out in Poland to victims of among others the labor camp “Reichsautobahnlager Annaberg” in Upper Silesia (Poland) where several acts of death were found, including those of Izak Vos. This document shows that Izak Vos died already 1 December 1942 in camp Annaberg.  On the death certificate is mentioned as cause of death “leftside pneumonia” (linksseitige Lungenentzündung).

By establishing the date of death of Izak Vos, the official juridical date is maintained as stated after the war by the Dutch Department of Justice.
