Biography

About Jacob Juda van Gelder

Jacob Juda van Gelder was a son of Philip van Gelder and Judic Appelboom. He was married three times, the first time on 13 August 1890 in Amsterdam to the in 1868 in London born Sophie Mendes, a daughter of David Mendes and Clara Isaac. The couple had a daughter in 1901: Judith. She was killed during the Shoah.

Presumably, Jacob Juda has divorced Sophie Mendes in 1901 or 1902 as on 25 February 1903, as he married in Antwerp for the 2nd time to Sara Groenteman, a daughter of Mozes Groenteman and Bloeme Rens. From this marriage, two sons were born in Antwerp: in 1903 Mozes and in 1905 Raphael. The latter has survived the Holocaust. Mozes however, unmarried, has been killed in the Shoah. Sara Groenteman died on 5 October 1931 and has been interred two days later in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen.

Jacob Juda’s 3rd marriage was in Amsterdam on 5 April 1933 to Sara Mok, a daughter of Philip Mok and Roosje Deutz. There was no offspring from this marriage.
