During the war Hijman Poons was hidden. He was called Herman. Together with his mother Esther and some other persons in hiding, they were brought to the family Fleischeue-Bettonville - Opperven 161 (today changed in Dorpsstraat 5) in Oirsbeek. Herman's father planned to join them later as he would still like to sell their furniture, in which he did not succeed because he was arrested. All persons concerned stayed at this address from February 1943 till the date of their address on 16 November 1943.
