Johanna Roozendaal was the daughter of Ephraïm Roozendaar and Hendrina Elkus Johanna had two brothers and a sister: Mozes (1872), Salomon (1876) and Theodora (1880). Her parents had two other children (both named Mina) who died young. In 1882, the family moved to Nordhorn in Germany, eight kilometres from their native Dutch town of Denekamp.
