Levie Schelvis was a son of Arie Schelvis and Elsje Polak. He came from a family with seven children. His other siblings were Wolf, Mozes, Marianne, Rebecca, Salomon and Esther.
Levie married Eva de Leeuwe in Rotterdam on 1 November 1939.
