Frederik Marinus van Gelderen (known as Frits) studied chemistry in Zurich, where he took his PhD degree. He was unmarried. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he settled at 50 Haaksbergerstraat in Enschede. From 1916 he worked at the Van Gelderen family business, which consisted of the Stoomweverij Nijverheid and the Ramie Union. The Ramie Union produced incandescent gas mantles and industrial china.
Frederik Marinus van Gelderen tried to escape to Switzerland during the war. He was caught in Paris and deported to Auschwitz.
A memorial plaque listing the names of staff members who did not survive the war has been affixed in the former residence of the director of the Stoomweverij Nijverheid at 2 Nijverheidstraat in Enschede. Eight of those listed were Jews, including Frederik Marinus van Gelderen.
