Joël van Essen was the son of Salomon van Essen and Sophia Joles. He was married and lived with his wife at 26 Sassenstraat in Zwolle. Joël van Essen died at Vught concentration camp on 18 May 1943.

We have been unable to determine whether one or more members of this family survived the war. While their names do not appear on the lists of survivors, we have not been able to trace them in In Memoriam either. They are therefore labeled as 'surviving' and their names are not listed.
In addition, a Jokos file (number 6096) on this family is at the Amsterdam Municipal Archive. Access is subject to authorization from the Stichting Joods Maatschappelijk Werk.The Jokos file reveals that a claim was lodged for compensation for :
