Jacob van Dijk and his family

Jacob (Jaap) van Dijk and Elisabeth (Lies) Vieijra were good friends with their non-Jewish neighbours. A former boy-next-door remembers they were quite liberal, he a bit more than she, but that they kept the Shabbat in honour and started it on friday with a beautifully layed table with burning candles. Elisabeth took care of her boy-next-door almost weekly on the day his mother went to visit her family. She told him and Abraham (Appie) van Kloeten, another boy-next-door, often very exciting stories. Elizabeth had a little dog called Fikkie. Jacob was Ashkenazi, Elisabeth Sephardi.
